Walker was sitting in his driveway. A nervous flutter began in Lane’s gut at the first sight of the man’s giant truck parked outside Lane’s door. Fear shot through him when he spotted Walker behind the wheel, leaned against the door with his eyes closed. Lane jumped from his Jeep before he’d finished rolling and circled the truck. When he eased the door open, hoping Walker wouldn’t fall out, Walker shot up, blinking. He looked confused until he focused on Lane. His face softened.

“Hey. Sorry. I must’ve dozed off.”

Lane bent at the waist and sucked air. His heartbeat pounded in his ears while he tried calming his racing heart. “You scared the hell out of me being all slumped over like that.” Lane straightened. His fear turned to fury. “You should’ve just used the spare key and went inside. It’s not good for you to be sitting out here all day.”

Walker rubbed his eyes. He still looked lost and half asleep. “I’m sorry.”

“Stop apologizing,” Lane snapped. He took another calming breath. His shoulders sagged. “Come on.” He headed for the door, feeling like he weighed a ton. Lane couldn’t handle the thought of anything happening to Walker. Damn it. He was barely clinging to sanity and sobriety as it was. With his keys in the door, Lane froze as Walker’s arms encircled him—one arm around his waist and the other across Lane’s throat, preventing him from getting away. He invaded Lane’s space. His face burrowed in the crook of Lane’s neck as his chest collided with Lane’s back. Goosebumps rose on Lane’s skin as Walker took a deep breath against the side of Lane’s neck. “Please don’t be mad anymore.” Each word of Walker’s plea brushed Lane’s skin. “You’re my best friend. I should’ve said that.”

Lane’s eyes burned. He dropped his chin to the forearm Walker had around his throat. Lane didn’t know how to fight Walker. He didn’t know if he wanted to do this anymore either. It hurt too much, being in love alone. “How could you choose to do this without me?” That was the gist of things. Walker had every intention of shutting him out. After everything, Lane didn’t understand.

“How can I drag you through this?”

Lane turned in Walker’s hold. Walker’s arms fell away, but his hands lingered on Lane’s hips and he didn’t step back. “It’s not dragging if I want to be there. That’s who we are,” Lane said, motioning between them. “Through everything life throws our way, we stick together. You’re supposed to know that. You’re supposed to know...”

Walker’s gaze deepened. He looked as if he held his breath. “What am I supposed to know?” Walker asked when Lane didn’t finish.

Lane spent a moment wondering if he was brave enough for this. Then he spent another wondering if he could live without Walker ever knowing. One was heavier than the other. There was no real choice. Lane felt how he felt, and it wasn’t going away. “You’re supposed to know that I love you.
